Acne is a very common skin condition that often begins in adolescence, with many people continuing to experience acne into their 20s and 30s. It is characterised by inflamed red skin, blackheads, whiteheads, nodules and pimples. Acne occurs when sebum (oil) and dead skin block pores and hair follicles, resulting in bacterial growth. This environmental combination causes the sebaceous (oil) glands to become blocked and irritated. Acne can have many triggers, including hormones, diet, environmental factors or genetics.
What causes acne scars?
As the body tries to heal and repair inflamed acne skin, it may produce excess collagen for the new skin. This can result in bumpy, discoloured or thick skin – aka scar tissue. Touching, scratching, picking or squeezing spots can also make acne worse, pushing oil further into the skin layers or causing infection. Harsh scrubs or cleansers can also be counter-productive. Some acne scars fade over time, while others may worsen.
